President Donald Trump has declared that he will only participate in a 60 Minutes interview if CBS News issues an apology for a previous interview where journalist Leslie Stahl disputed the validity of the Hunter Biden laptop story. During that interview, Stahl had asserted that the laptop “could not be verified.”
This laptop, which became central to the controversy surrounding Hunter Biden, was introduced as evidence against him in June. In 2020, multiple intelligence experts, under the guidance of the CIA, signed a letter dismissing the laptop as Russian disinformation, effectively suppressing the story.
Trump made it clear during an appearance in Milwaukee on Tuesday, ahead of the vice-presidential debate between his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), that the incident with Stahl is still fresh in his memory. According to the New York Post, Trump stated, “First, I want to get an apology,” when asked about declining a recent 60 Minutes interview. He added, “They said the laptop from hell was from Russia. I said it wasn’t from Russia; it was from Hunter [Biden]. They really owed me an apology.”
CBS News confirmed Trump’s decision not to proceed with the interview in a statement shared by the Daily Mail, saying, “After initially accepting 60 Minutes’ request for an interview with Scott Pelley, former President Trump’s campaign has decided not to participate.” They further explained, “For over half a century, 60 Minutes has invited the Democratic and Republican tickets to appear on our broadcast as Americans head to the polls. This year, both the Harris and Trump campaigns agreed to sit down with 60 Minutes.”
Trump’s 2020 interview with Stahl had been contentious from the start, with the former president accusing CBS News of handling Joe Biden’s interview with kid gloves, calling it “a joke” and lacking tough questions. During that interview, Trump also brought up the claim that the Obama administration had spied on his campaign.
The conversation eventually turned to Hunter Biden’s laptop, with Trump asserting it was crucial to investigate whether Biden was corrupt, citing alleged financial ties to China, Ukraine, and Russia. When Stahl countered that the laptop could “not be verified,” Trump disagreed, stating, “Of course it can be verified. Excuse me, Leslie, they found a laptop—” Stahl reiterated her stance that the laptop could “not be verified.”
Frustrated by the interview, Trump eventually cut it short, telling Stahl, “I think we have enough of an interview here … That’s enough. Let’s go. Let’s go.”
