President Joe Biden is increasingly facing electoral headwinds, according to a new survey, as more and more Democrats — including some of the party’s top leaders — call on him to step aside.
In a recent poll conducted by The Economist and YouGov, released on Wednesday, 49 percent of U.S. adults expressed confidence in Trump’s potential victory in the 2024 presidential election should he be the Republican nominee, with Biden as the Democratic candidate. This sentiment was shared across party lines: 16 percent of Democrats, 46 percent of independents, and an impressive 88 percent of Republicans voiced their support for this outcome, Newsweek reported.
“Trump’s odds for reelection were significantly greater than the 26 percent of adults who said they believed Biden would win in November. Another 25 percent of the 1,582 adults surveyed between July 13 and 16 said they were unsure. The survey specified that participants should pick who they believe will be successful ‘regardless of who you prefer’ for president,” Newsweek reported.
“A spokesperson for YouGov confirmed with Newsweek that the recent poll result is the highest number of support Trump has received when compared to past surveys where participants were asked who they viewed as the likely next president. Last week’s poll found that 48 percent of adults anticipated that Trump would be reelected, while 29 percent picked Biden,” the outlet added.
Before the June 27 debate between the two, which most observers agree was a horrible night for Biden, 41% of respondents to a recent Economist/YouGov study said they thought Trump would win, while 32% thought Biden would win.
Participants were also asked about their likelihood of believing President Biden will choose to step down as the Democratic Party’s nominee before November. Party members are divided on whether the president should withdraw from the 2024 election, allowing another Democrat to assume the position on the ballot.
Polling indicates that Vice President Kamala Harris is the frontrunner to succeed Biden if he opts to step down, Newsweek added.
