Vice President Kamala Harris asserts that former President Donald Trump will use the government as a weapon against his political adversaries, yet Democrats are already focusing their efforts on one of Trump’s key supporters: Elon Musk.
Since acquiring Twitter in 2022 and openly backing Trump, Musk has faced mounting scrutiny. Experts told the Daily Caller that Washington’s bureaucratic framework and extensive regulations provide officials with the means to target him.
“I think if Harris wins, they will launch multiple criminal investigations of Elon Musk,” former U.S. District Attorney for Utah and Executive Director of Right On Crime, Brett Tolman, told the outlet. “There’s no question.”
Musk’s companies are currently embroiled in multiple disputes concerning federal investigations and regulations. Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and X are all facing scrutiny and regulatory challenges from various government agencies, the outlet reported.
Tolman said other countries could target Musk and his company X, formerly Twitter. “You have countries that have indicated they’re going to launch an investigation,” Tolman stated. “So, I think it is a pivotal moment for Elon Musk.”
“There are countless examples of the DOJ acting with their hands on the scale,” Tolman told the Caller.
Last year, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, claiming the company discriminated against refugees and asylees during its hiring process, as stated in a DOJ press release — despite the fact that without SpaceX, NASA wouldn’t be able to perform many of its functions.
“You saw a drastic change that started to occur with Obama and now Biden,” Tolman told the Caller. “It’s unrecognizable, the department right now.”
The DOJ has also turned its attention to the construction of Musk’s Texas home, initiating an investigation last September, according to TechCrunch. “I’ve never seen the DOJ act and behave this way before,” Tolman said.
Elon Musk is facing scrutiny from more than just the DOJ; the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) allegedly attempted to sway an independent assessor to “punish” Musk’s platform, as reported by the House Judiciary Committee.
Since Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, the FTC has issued 16 demand letters to X Corp, according to legal documents from 2023. This marks a significant increase from the 28 demand letters sent over the ten years leading up to Musk’s takeover.
