Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat to President-elect Donald Trump as “heartbreaking” and shared details of an emotional conversation she recently had with the vice president. Pelosi made these remarks during a podcast interview with Lulu Garcia-Navarro, co-host of The Interview, in an episode recorded after Election Day.
Garcia-Navarro offered a preview of the conversation during an appearance on CNN, explaining, “She talked about the fact that this was a ‘heartbreaking’ loss. She used that word.”
“She also mentioned having a very emotional conversation with the vice president. They are friends, and it was a difficult discussion for both of them,” Garcia-Navarro added, according to The New York Post.
Pelosi was visibly emotional on Wednesday as she attended Harris’ concession speech at Howard University. Leading up to Election Day, Pelosi had expressed strong confidence in Harris’ chances of defeating Trump.
“We know what we’re doing,” Pelosi confidently told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki just days before the election. A post on Pelosi’s Instagram page highlighted the statement, adding, “[Harris] will be president.”
Garcia-Navarro further emphasized that Harris’ defeat has been particularly tough for Pelosi, who was instrumental in convincing President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 race. “It’s a profoundly difficult moment for the former speaker of the House,” she said.
