A new poll conducted after the Los Angeles riots shows that a majority of Hispanic voters back President Donald Trump’s deportation agenda, including efforts to speed up removals of illegal immigrants with criminal records.
According to data from the League of American Workers (LAW) and the TechnoMetrica Institute of Policy and Politics (TIPP), 53% of Hispanic voters and nearly half of voters aged 18 to 24 say they either strongly or somewhat support Trump’s policy of increasing deportations focused on individuals with criminal backgrounds.
Overall, nearly six in ten registered voters expressed support for the president’s approach.
Support was also strong among black voters, with 46% saying they supported the policy. Trump made significant gains in the 2024 election among Hispanic and young male voters, including a noticeable shift among black men, 20% of whom backed him, according to CNN exit polling.
The poll also found that 65% of all respondents — and 61% of Hispanic respondents — believe Trump deserves credit for the 95% reduction in so-called “gotaways” at the border. The poll defined gotaways as “individuals who illegally cross the border and are observed but not apprehended.”
President Trump’s immigration strategy has centered on border enforcement and removal of individuals with criminal records, reversing the catch-and-release approach used during the Biden administration. His administration has emphasized the need for stronger border controls and has cited the steep drop in illegal crossings and gotaways as evidence of the policy’s success.
“As this polling makes clear, Americans chose Donald Trump precisely because of his America First approach to immigration, plus law-and-order generally,” LAW President Steve Cortes said in a statement. “This survey reveals that violence and radicalism in Los Angeles and other cities only serves to reinforce the will of the people to achieve secure borders, orderly lawful migration, and peace in our streets.”
Cortes, a former senior advisor to both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance, currently serves as a senior political advisor to CatholicVote.
The LAW/TIPP survey was conducted online from June 9 to 11 and included 1,584 registered voters across the U.S. The poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points.
Additional polling from Pew Research Center in March found that 83% of American adults believe some or all illegal immigrants should be deported. Among those supporting partial deportation, 97% said violent offenders should be removed. These views reflect Trump’s current policy, which prioritizes the deportation of violent criminals.
