American Killed In Deadly Russian Strike On Kyiv as White House Weighs Sanctions Bill

A U.S. citizen was among 15 people killed in a Russian drone and missile assault on Kyiv, Ukraine, this week, according to State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce. The attack, which began late Tuesday and lasted nearly nine hours, is the deadliest on the Ukrainian capital this year.

“We are aware of last night’s attack on Kyiv that resulted in numerous casualties, including the tragic death of a U.S. citizen,” Bruce told reporters during a Wednesday briefing. “We condemn those strikes and extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected.”

The American victim’s identity has not been released “out of respect to the family during this obviously horrible time,” Bruce said. She added, “The department has no higher priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens abroad,” and confirmed that consular assistance is being offered.

The Associated Press reported that 156 others were injured in the large-scale assault, during which Russian forces launched over 440 drones and 32 missiles. In addition to Kyiv, six other Ukrainian regions—Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, Chernihiv, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, and Mykolai—were also targeted, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The strikes came just as G7 leaders gathered in Canada for this year’s summit. President Donald Trump attended the opening day but departed early to focus on the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel.

Speaking from Canada earlier in the week, Trump criticized former President Barack Obama and ex-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for what he called a “very big mistake” in removing Russia from the G8 in 2014. “I would say that that was a mistake because I think you wouldn’t have a war right now if you had Russia,” Trump said, appearing alongside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

Trump added, “You wouldn’t have a war right now if Trump were president four years ago… But it used to be the G8.”

While the administration continues to push for peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, Trump has increasingly expressed doubt over Vladimir Putin’s willingness to end the war. “What the hell happened” to the Russian president, Trump recently asked.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the White House is working with Congress to amend a sanctions bill targeting Russia. Discussions are ongoing, though no timeline has been finalized. The administration reportedly favors congressional action over executive-led sanctions at this time.
