Bogalusa Mayor Tyrin Truong, 25, was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a drug-trafficking investigation conducted by Louisiana authorities.
Truong faces charges of engaging in transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses, solicitation of prostitutes, and unauthorized use of a movable—an offense involving the unauthorized use of another person’s property without consent, Fox News reports.
“We have zero tolerance for wrongdoing, especially from public officials,” Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said. “I’m very proud of all our law enforcement agencies who worked on this investigation.”
The Louisiana State Police Narcotics and Violent Crime Task Force began its investigation into a drug-trafficking organization (DTO) operating in the Bogalusa area in April 2024. The months-long operation involved cooperation with the 22nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, the attorney general’s office, and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
Authorities allege the DTO was distributing opioids, high-grade marijuana, THC products, MDMA, and other controlled substances. Social media platforms were reportedly used to manage drug distribution and payments, expanding the organization’s reach.
Proceeds from drug sales were allegedly used to purchase firearms, some of which were distributed to individuals prohibited from owning them, while others were linked to violent crimes in the area, reports NOLA.
The investigation led to multiple search and arrest warrants, resulting in the detention of Truong and six others allegedly involved in the DTO:
- MacKenzie Lynn Cefalu, 24
- De-Saleem Wali Pittman, 24
- Dirul S. Pittman, 22
- Salehal-Dien Malike Pittman, 26
- Tonya Renee Stage, 51
- Devan Michael Williams, 28
Like Truong, the other suspects were charged with engaging in transactions involving proceeds from drug offenses. Additional charges included conspiracy to distribute Schedule I controlled substances, with some individuals also facing charges for distributing Schedule II substances.
State police stated that additional suspects and matters remain under investigation.
“We are going to continue to invest time and resources into helping the citizens of Bogalusa,” District Attorney Collin Sims said. “We are not finished.”
Truong’s bond was set at $150,000 on Tuesday afternoon, according to FOX 8 New Orleans. His office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Truong made history in 2022 at age 23 by becoming Bogalusa’s youngest mayor and the youngest mayors in Louisiana’s history, defeating incumbent Wendy O’Quin Perrette, who served as mayor since 2014.
