The United States has provided Ukraine with an additional $3.4 billion in budget aid, offering resources as the country faces escalating Russian attacks on civilians and infrastructure, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced Monday.
In a statement, Yellen explained that the direct budget assistance, coordinated with the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department, represents the final disbursement under the 2024 Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, Reuters reported.
A U.S. official stated that this latest funding brings the total U.S. budget aid to Ukraine to just over $30 billion since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022. The majority of these funds have been used to sustain Ukraine’s government, including paying salaries for teachers and other state employees.
Earlier on Monday, President Joe Biden announced an additional $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, which is separate from the direct budget aid.
Nearly three years into the war, the United States has committed some $175 billion in total assistance to Ukraine, Reuters added, despite a national debt approaching $36.5 trillion.
Biden’s administration has been working urgently to bolster support for Ukraine before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, as Trump has publicly questioned military aid and vowed to end the war within 24 hours of assuming office, the outlet said.
Trump has called for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to negotiate a deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring the conflict to an end. Meanwhile, some of Trump’s fellow Republicans, who will control both houses of Congress starting next month, have expressed growing reluctance to approve additional aid for Kyiv.
Also, some incoming Trump officials have said they believe Russia and Ukraine are both ready to end the fighting, which has reportedly cost both nations dearly in terms of manpower and treasure.
