Alabama Towns Latest To Be Overrun By Migrants

As vanloads of Haitian migrants began arriving over the summer, residents in Athens, Ala., started to question whether their already-growing community could accommodate the influx.

Unsatisfied with the responses from local officials, Jarrod and Amanda Schulte decided to investigate on their own. They soon found themselves exploring north Athens, a struggling area of the city where migrants from around the world reside in deteriorating homes, the Daily Wire reported.

“What we found was not very pretty,” Jarrod Schulte told The Daily Wire. “The city of Athens, our politicians, they all need to do better.”

The Schultes and other residents in Alabama are concerned that their cities might become the next Springfield, Ohio, where a significant influx of Haitian migrants was accompanied by an increase in crime and traffic accidents, the outlet noted.

Springfield garnered national attention after former President Donald Trump referenced the city during the September presidential debate while discussing the effects of mass migration on small towns across the country, not just in border states. Similar issues have emerged in Pennsylvania and Indiana, where residents fear their small cities lack the resources to manage the influx.

Virginia’s voter roll maintenance program was implemented in August and involves comparing the state Department of Motor Vehicles’ list of self-identified noncitizens with its list of registered voters. Individuals identified as noncitizens were flagged and informed that their voter registration would be canceled unless they could prove their citizenship within 14 days.

The Justice Department contended that these removals were conducted too close to the November 5 elections and violated the NVRA’s quiet period provision. That argument was supported by a U.S. district judge in Alexandria, who ordered Virginia last week to cease its removals and reinstate the registrations of all 1,600 individuals who had been removed.

The Alabama cities of Albertville and Enterprise have also experienced an influx of migrant workers. As locals seek clarity regarding the migrants’ legal status, city officials have rightly directed their frustrations toward the Biden-Harris administration.

“We are aware that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’ program allows refugees from Haiti to be placed in our community,” Enterprise Mayor William Cooper said last month. “It is unfortunate that we as a city were given no advanced notice nor additional resources to accommodate this influx.”

“As this is a federal issue, Athens officials reached out to state and federal officials, including the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” city spokeswoman Holly Hollman told the outlet. “Federal officials have advised there are new immigrants from Haiti with federal work permits in the area, and they are here working legally in Alabama.”

In Albertville, about 110 Haitian students have joined the school system of about 5,800 since June.

“It’s complicated,” Albertville Superintendent Bart Reeves told the Alabama Daily News in August. “When kids get here, we want to educate them to the best of our ability and give them a first-class education. And we’ll keep doing that. But we need help. I cannot emphasize that enough.”
