Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has apologized to U.S. President Donald Trump following their heated Oval Office exchange last month, according to special envoy Steve Witkoff.
“Zelensky sent a letter to the president. He apologized for that whole incident that happened in the Oval Office,” Witkoff told Fox News on Monday.
“I think that it was an important step, and there’s been a lot of discussion between our teams and the Ukrainians and the Europeans who are relevant to this discussion as well,” reports New York Post.
Trump previously acknowledged receiving a letter from Zelensky but did not mention any apology. Instead, he read a portion of it to Congress, in which Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s desire for peace talks.
“Ukraine is ready to come to the negotiating table as soon as possible to bring lasting peace closer. Nobody wants peace more than the Ukrainians,” Trump read from the letter last week. “We do really value how much America has done to help Ukraine maintain its sovereignty and independence.”
Earlier, Zelensky aide Mykhailo Podolyak told French outlet Le Point that the Ukrainian leader would not apologize for what happened during the February 28 Oval Office meeting.
U.S. and Ukrainian officials are scheduled to meet in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday to restart peace talks. The discussions follow the tense White House meeting, during which Zelensky was reportedly asked to leave, and a planned mineral agreement between the two nations was left unsigned.
In the aftermath of the dispute, intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine were put on hold. CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed the pause, though Witkoff noted that intelligence sharing for defensive purposes wasn’t entirely “shut off.”
