Two uniformed court officers were injured in a stabbing incident Monday morning inside the Manhattan Criminal Court building in what authorities describe as a deliberate attack on courthouse security personnel.
The assault occurred just before 9:45 a.m. in the lobby on the south side of the building, according to a statement from New York State Office of Court Administration spokesman Al Baker. The incident unfolded beyond the facility’s metal detectors, raising questions about how the weapon made it inside.
Jonathan Wohl, 37, of Queens, ran into the lobby and suddenly attacked the officers with a knife.
“Preliminary information indicated that at least two Court Officers suffered stab and slash injuries in the attacks,” Baker said. “Several Court Officers immediately rushed to stop the assailant, subduing him near a bank of magnetometers, disarming him, and taking him into custody.”
Security footage reportedly shows the attack as a direct attempt to target uniformed officers assigned to courthouse security. The stabbings happened near the building’s screening area but past the point of security barriers.
One officer was able to walk to an ambulance without assistance, while the other was transported in a wheelchair. Both are listed in stable condition and are expected to recover. However, the New York State Supreme Court Officers Association told FOX 5 that one of the officers sustained significant wounds to the face and neck.
A criminal investigation is now being led by the New York State Unified Court System.
The courthouse is the same location where President Donald Trump’s criminal trial and Daniel Penny’s trial were held. Penny was acquitted in December 2024 of criminally negligent homicide in the subway death of Jordan Neely.
