Trump’s EPA On Mission To ‘Fix’ Hated Vehicle Feature Imposed During Biden Admin

President Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is moving to overhaul the widely disliked start/stop technology found in many newer vehicles, which automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights or in traffic to conserve fuel and reduce emissions.

EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced Monday that the agency will begin reviewing options to modify the start/stop feature in vehicles. Currently, the EPA incentivizes automakers to include the system, which allegedly can improve fuel efficiency by approximately 3% to 10%.

“Start/stop technology: where your car dies at every red light so companies get a climate participation trophy. EPA approved it, and everyone hates it, so we’re fixing it,” Zeldin wrote on X.

Zeldin did not elaborate on what a “fix” might look like.

Start/stop technology was initially introduced by European automakers in hybrid vehicles, but over the past decade, it has become widespread across a variety of new models, including SUVs and pickup trucks. As complaints from drivers increased, more manufacturers began offering the ability to disable the feature. Buick was among the first to do so, adding a shut-off option to its 2019 Envision in response to “customer feedback,” according to Car and Driver. Other automakers, including Ford, GM, Volvo, and Lincoln, followed suit between 2017 and 2018.

While many vehicles with start/stop systems now allow drivers to deactivate the feature, it can’t be permanently disabled—meaning drivers who dislike it must turn it off manually each time they start the car. Additionally, the EPA’s fuel economy ratings for these vehicles are impacted if the system is turned off during testing.

“If a vehicle’s stop/start system can be permanently turned off, then the vehicle’s fuel economy is tested both when stop/start is active and when it’s off. The EPA then averages the two tests for a resulting fuel-economy rating found on the car’s window sticker—which is certain to be lower,” Car & Driver reported.

The response to Zeldin’s announcement was overwhelmingly positive on social media, with many people calling the objective “common sense.”
