Three illegal immigrants are facing federal charges after authorities in San Diego intercepted nearly 8,000 pounds of methamphetamine earlier this week during a coordinated law enforcement operation, reports Fox.
The arrests took place Monday around 7 pm during a joint investigation in the South Bay area, according to a Thursday statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office. Detectives with the sheriff’s department and U.S. Border Patrol agents reportedly observed three vehicles being loaded with suspected narcotics in a parking lot on Otay Mesa Road.
After surveillance, two of the vehicles were tracked to a motel in San Ysidro and the third to a separate motel in Chula Vista. All three drivers were arrested without incident, officials said.
The suspects were identified by the Department of Justice as 27-year-old Erick Omar Arriola of El Salvador, along with Mexican nationals Eugenio Lizama, 35, and Baltazar Rodriguez Reyes, 49. Arriola has prior felony convictions, including DUI, battery of a spouse, and false imprisonment, the DOJ noted.
Authorities recovered 61 bundles of methamphetamine across the three vehicles, with a total weight of more than 7,700 pounds. The drugs have an estimated street value of $5.5 million.
“It was one of the biggest seizures of methamphetamine in 2025 in the Southern District of California, and the most significant so far by the new Homeland Security Task Force San Diego, which was recently established by the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security at the request of President Trump,” the DOJ said in its statement.
All three men were booked into the San Diego Central Jail and are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy, transportation, and possession of controlled substances for sale.
