Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon is set to plead guilty in his New York border wall fraud case in exchange for avoiding prison time, Law360 reports.
Bannon was charged with defrauding donors who contributed to the “We Build the Wall” campaign, which raised over $20 million to construct sections of border fencing. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office alleged that Bannon misled donors about how the funds would be used. Bannon has denied any wrongdoing.
“It is anticipated that Mr. Bannon will plead guilty tomorrow under an agreement with the district attorney and the court that he will not receive a sentence that includes any jail time,” said his attorney, John F. Carman.
Bannon’s trial was initially scheduled for February 25 but was postponed to March 4 after he changed legal representation. He cited the need for a more aggressive defense, saying, “I need every tool in the toolbox.”
The decision to switch attorneys followed a ruling by Judge April Neubauer allowing prosecutors to present key evidence, including an email in which Bannon allegedly referred to the campaign as “a scam,” according to the Associated Press.
