Report: Natl. Security Adviser Mike Waltz Out

National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, are set to be removed from their NSC leadership roles—potentially as soon as Thursday—longtime political reporter Mark Halperin first disclosed.

Halperin reported that additional NSC staff will also be replaced amid “general unhappiness” within the national security community about the council’s management. According to Halperin, the White House, State Department, and Treasury Department have all expressed dissatisfaction with Waltz’s leadership.

Halperin broke the news during Thursday’s episode of the “The Morning Meeting” podcast he does with former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and Dan Turrentine on 2WAY.tv.

Since Halperin’s report, CBS News and Politico are among the outlets reporting the impending ouster. CNN reported that Waltz was informed earlier this week that his time as national security adviser had was ending.

Politico reported that White House special envoy Steve Witkoff is the frontrunner to succeed Waltz, noting the search has been underway for weeks.

Halperin emphasized that the shake-up isn’t related to the Signal incident—in fact, that controversy arguably spared Waltz. The flap began when he accidentally added Jeffrey Goldberg, editor of The Atlantic, to a March 11 group chat on the Signal encrypted messaging app, in which senior officials were discussing plans to strike the Houthis in Yemen.

According to Halperin, dissatisfaction with Waltz’s performance predated the Signal mishap.

“There’s lots of levels of unhappiness and it’s less about Signalgate than it is about… a general belief that it’s not being run efficiently, in an organized way. It may happen as early as today; it may not happen ever, because it’s [President] Donald Trump. But the plan for it is to happen soon, maybe this weekend,” Halperin said.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Newsmax when the outlet reached out for a comment about the reporting: “We are not going to respond to reporting from anonymous sources.”
