President Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of Congress was widely well-received by Americans who watched it, according to multiple post-speech polls.
A CNN poll found that 69% of viewers reacted positively, with a plurality (44%) describing their response as “very positive.” Similarly, a CBS News/YouGov survey reported that 76% of viewers had a favorable reaction to the speech.
Beyond the overall positive reception, most viewers felt Trump addressed issues that mattered to them, with 63% telling CBS News/YouGov that the speech focused on topics of personal importance.
The address also evoked strong emotional responses, with 68% of viewers saying it made them feel hopeful, and 54% expressing a sense of pride.
Trump himself came off as “presidential” and “entertaining” to 74% of viewers, “inspiring” to 71%, and “unifying” to 62%. Forty-six percent said that Trump appeared “divisive.”
The majority of speech watchers were Republican, but Trump’s strong post-speech approval cannot be solely attributed to GOP support. According to CBS News/YouGov, the audience breakdown was 51% Republican, 20% Democrat, and 27% independent, indicating that his message resonated beyond his base.
One of the night’s most dramatic moments came when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) ordered the removal of Rep. Al Green (D-TX) from the House chamber. Green refused to sit down and continued shouting about Medicaid from the floor, prompting Johnson to instruct the sergeant-at-arms to escort him out for violating decorum.
“Finding that members continue to engage in willful and concerted disruption of proper decorum, the chair now directs the sergeant-at-arms to restore order. Remove this gentleman from the chamber,” Johnson said.
Roughly three in four viewers agreed with Johnson’s decision to have Green booted from the address, CBS News/YouGov found.
