Although President-elect Donald Trump has not yet been sworn in, his promises of stricter border policies are already influencing many potential illegal immigrants to turn back and return to their home countries.
According to a Venezuelan official speaking with Reuters, between 50 to 100 Venezuelan nationals in Mexico are now requesting “voluntary return” each week. Many of these migrants have faced dangerous situations in Mexico, including kidnappings and sexual exploitation. A dozen migrants told the news outlet that they would rather return to Venezuela despite the challenges that initially led them to leave, the Daily Caller reported.
A key point of controversy is Trump’s pledge to eliminate the CBP One app, which has been used by hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals to schedule asylum appointments after the Biden administration expanded the program.
Many migrants now feel that with Trump’s planned border crackdown, it is no longer worth waiting in Mexico, where many have endured extortion, sexual assault, kidnappings, and other forms of violence from cartels and others exploiting the migration crisis.
“I am traumatized. If I don’t get the appointment, I will go back,” Nidia Montenegro, a 52-year-old Venezuelan national, said to Reuters.
Under the Biden administration, Mexico became the primary transit point for millions of migrants heading to the U.S., many of whom believed they could either claim asylum or sneak past Border Patrol to enter the country. There were approximately 8.5 million encounters at the southern border during President Joe Biden’s time in office, with fiscal years 2023 and 2024 marking the highest number of migrant crossings in history.
According to an analysis by the Migration Policy Institute, President Biden took 296 executive actions on immigration during his first year in office. Of these, 89 specifically reversed or began the process of undoing policies implemented by the Trump administration.
Trump, who gained a reputation as an immigration hardliner during his first term, has promised to bring a range of tough measures if re-elected, including executing the largest deportation initiative in U.S. history, resuming construction of the border wall, reinstating the Remain in Mexico program, and introducing several other proposals aimed at tightening immigration policies.
“As President I will immediately end the migrant invasion of America. We will stop all migrant flights, end all illegal entries, terminate the Kamala phone app for smuggling illegals (CBP One App), revoke deportation immunity, suspend refugee resettlement, and return Kamala’s illegal migrants to their home countries (also known as remigration),” Trump posted on X in September.
