Illegal Immigrant Charged with Terrorism and Hate Crimes In Chicago Synagogue Shooting

An illegal immigrant accused of shooting a Jewish man multiple times while he was en route to a Chicago synagogue is now facing terrorism and hate crime charges related to the attack.

During a press conference on Thursday, Chicago Police Department Chief Larry Snelling announced that 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi had been charged with one count of felony terrorism and one count of felony hate crime. “We want everybody to know that we will never tolerate violence that’s rooted in hate and bigotry,” Snelling said. “This shooting is deeply personal to members of our Jewish community. We know that. But this shooting should be personal to everyone across the city.”

These charges are in addition to over a dozen felony counts already filed against Abdallahi, which include six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a police officer or firefighter, and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

The charges stem from an incident on October 26, when Abdallahi allegedly targeted a 39-year-old Orthodox Jewish man who was wearing a kippah while walking to his synagogue in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood. Less than 30 minutes after the attack, Abdallahi was identified and allegedly opened fire at responding officers, prompting police to return fire and strike him.

Abdallahi, a Mauritanian national, entered the U.S. illegally and was released after being apprehended by Border Patrol in March 2023 in the San Diego Sector. Fox News previously confirmed his release into the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported that they had lodged a detainer request for Abdallahi, which would transfer him to ICE custody upon his release. However, sanctuary policies in Cook County prevent local authorities from cooperating with such requests.

During the incident, no police or firefighters were injured, though Abdallahi remains hospitalized. Due to his injuries, investigators have been unable to interview him, according to Chief Snelling.

Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx noted that digital and forensic evidence revealed Abdallahi specifically targeted the Jewish community. “Based on information contained from that digital evidence, we were able to determine that this individual plotted on this particular community, sought out this particular community, sought out this particular faith, that the efforts to engage in this crime were not spur of the moment,” she said. “They were not simply to rattle at the time, but to inflict terror.”

Detectives compiled evidence from multiple sources, including his phone, to build the case. “I want to make this clear to everybody in every community. We did not secure these charges because of public pressure, or because of media attention,” Snelling said. “Gathering evidence and facts takes time, and we have to do it in a timely fashion so that we don’t impede the possibility of getting charges. We will never do things just based on a belief. We need proof.”
