Hunter Biden Faces Substantial Jail Time If Convicted

Defense attorneys indicated on Monday that Hunter Biden will not testify in his gun trial, as President Joe Biden’s only living son faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

Hunter Biden was charged with three crimes related to his purchase of a handgun in October 2018. Prosecutors contend that Hunter, being a drug addict at the time, should have indicated this status on a firearms purchase form. By failing to do so, he is accused of making a false statement material to a firearms sale and making a false statement in a firearms transaction record, as reported by Two of the charges against Hunter carry a maximum sentence of 10 years each, while the other charge carries a maximum sentence of 5 years, as reported by NBC News. Each charge also carries a maximum fine of $250,000. This means that Hunter could potentially face up to 25 years in prison and owe $750,000 in fines.. These are the first two charges. The third charge alleges that Hunter violated a law prohibiting drug users and addicts from possessing firearms.

Two of the charges against Hunter carry a maximum sentence of 10 years each, while the other charge carries a maximum sentence of 5 years, as reported by NBC News. Each charge also comes with a maximum fine of $250,000. This means that Hunter could potentially face a total of 25 years in prison and owe fines of up to $750,000.

“After the defendant announced his awareness of a federal investigation of him in 2020, the defendant chose to author and sell a book in 2021 in which he made countless incriminating statements about his years-long drug usage, including during the time period he purchased and possessed the gun,” said Special Counsel David Weiss in court filings earlier this year.

On Thursday, President Biden stated that he would not pardon his son if Hunter is convicted. During an interview with ABC News, when asked if he would accept the outcome of Hunter’s criminal trial, President Biden responded affirmatively. Further, when questioned about the possibility of pardoning his son, Biden reiterated his position with a definitive “Yes,” indicating he would not consider a pardon.

Hunter Biden’s defense contends that he did not lie on the firearms purchase form because, although he was an addict, he was not using drugs at the time he bought the firearm. However, text exchanges between Hunter and Hallie Biden, the widow of Beau Biden, who became romantically involved with Hunter after her husband’s death, suggest that Hunter was using drugs within 11 days of the gun purchase.

During their relationship, which included Hunter introducing Hallie to crack cocaine, she texted Hunter, urging him to enter rehab. This plea came after she found the gun in Hunter’s unlocked vehicle and disposed of it, an action that angered Hunter.
