New York Governor Kathy Hochul is expected to announce on Thursday that she will not use her authority to remove New York City Mayor Eric Adams but will instead introduce new oversight measures for his administration, according to two officials familiar with the matter.
The decision follows Adams’ lawyer denying allegations that the mayor reached an agreement with the Trump administration’s Department of Justice to have his corruption case dropped in exchange for supporting federal immigration policies.
During a news conference later Thursday, Hochul is set to criticize Adams’ conduct and outline measures intended to hold his administration accountable. She is expected to state that she will not override the choice of voters but will implement steps to strengthen oversight by state and city officials.
The planned measures include appointing a state deputy inspector general focused solely on New York City, establishing a fund to allow the City Council speaker, city comptroller, and public advocate to take legal action against the Trump administration if Adams does not, and providing additional funding for the state comptroller to review city finances. Additionally, the mayor would be prohibited from appointing the head of the city’s Department of Investigation without the approval of the state inspector general.
The details of the proposals were still being finalized ahead of Hochul’s announcement, according to the officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.
