Harris Campaign Donates Large Sums to Leftist Groups Calling for Defunding the Police, Reparations

The Harris campaign issued multiple six-figure checks last month to left-leaning organizations, including groups advocating for defunding the police and reparations, some of which have connections to activists who support Louis Farrakhan, known for antisemitic remarks.

Federal Election Commission (FEC) filings show that, in September, the Harris campaign contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to black advocacy organizations actively mobilizing black voters ahead of next week’s election. On September 19, Black Voters Matter Fund received $150,000 from the Harris campaign, reports Fox News. The group has previously pushed to defund police departments and advocate for reparations, stating in February 2023, “The answer to police violence against communities of color is not more money for police. It’s time to defund the police and redirect those resources into building strong, healthy communities.”

In 2020, Black Voters Matter Fund posted, “We are proud to be partner in the #DemocracyFrontlinesFund, created to leverage millions of new dollars to fund black-led organizers fighting for free and fair elections, and working to defund prisons and police.” The group also commented on the election of U.S. sheriffs, stating, “We are working to defund sheriffs and build voter power. Reimagining the system also comes with taking action!”

Latosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter and frequent visitor to the Biden-Harris White House, has posted often about reparations, noting in a 2021 social media post that she’s advocated for the issue for 27 years. In a May post, the organization asserted, “We deserve to be compensated for the literal blood, sweat and tears our ancestors were forced to put into this country.” They added that reparations are “crucial for acknowledging past injustices and moving towards a more just and equitable future.”

Black Church PAC, which received $150,000 from the Harris campaign, is also involved in “Get Out the Vote” initiatives in key states, partnering with organizations calling for police defunding. Some of its board members are religious figures who have stirred controversy with their activism.

Another organization, Until Freedom, advocates for defunding and abolishing the police, even selling “defund the police” shirts on its website. Co-founder Tamika Mallory, who previously praised Farrakhan as the “GOAT” (Greatest of All Time), has repeatedly shown her support for him on social media through posts from Nation of Islam events. Mallory has also responded to critics claiming Harris does not back reparations, asserting that she’s heard Harris voice support for reparations “over and over again.” Though Harris has kept the specifics of a reparations plan under wraps, she previously stated during her 2019 presidential run, “there has to be some form of reparations” for black Americans.

The Harris campaign further donated $2,050,000 to the National Urban League, a prominent civil rights organization; $300,000 to Power Rising Action Fund, which supports black women in various sectors; and $250,000 to the National Action Network, founded by MSNBC host Al Sharpton, whose association with Farrakhan spans decades. At the 2019 National Action Network Convention, Sharpton asked Harris if she would sign H.R. 40, a bill introduced by the late Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, which proposes forming a commission to study reparations if it were to reach her desk.
