Fox News has reported that a law enforcement source said that former President Donald Trump is expected to be arraigned in court on Tuesday after being indicted by a Manhattan grand jury.
The arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 2:15 p.m. in Judge Juan Merchan’s courtroom on the 15th floor of 100 Centre Street in New York City. The case is related to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s investigation into Trump’s alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016, Fox News reported.
A second source has confirmed that, besides Trump’s personal attorney Joe Tacopina, the former president has made arrangements with the legal team of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to surrender without being handcuffed. The arrest will be handled by detectives from the DA’s office.
Law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, New York Police Department, FBI, New York State court officers, and the DA’s office, are scheduled to meet on Friday afternoon to finalize the details of logistics and security related to Trump’s arrest, the network’s report continued.
“The Secret Service will determine how Trump is brought in, the source familiar said,” the outlet noted.
Sources previously informed Fox News that Trump was requested to surrender to Bragg’s office on Friday after the grand jury voted to indict him a day earlier. However, the Secret Service stepped in and nixed that.
The criminal charges against Trump are unprecedented in American history, as no current or former president has been indicted before.
The charges stem from a years-long investigation into alleged hush money payments made by Trump to adult film star Daniels for $130,000 and former Playboy model Karen McDougal for $150,000 in order to keep them from disclosing their alleged sexual affairs with him during his 2016 presidential campaign. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and the affairs, Fox news added.
The had been previously investigated by both the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Southern District of New York and the Federal Election Commission, but there wasn’t enough credible evidence to file charges, so it’s not clear why Bragg thinks he has enough.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York had decided not to charge Trump with regard to the payment to Daniels in 2019, despite his former attorney Michael Cohen’s statement implicating him as part of his plea deal on campaign finance violations. The Federal Election Commission also closed its investigation into the matter in 2021, Fox News said.
“This evening we contacted Mr. Trump’s attorney to coordinate his surrender to the Manhattan D.A.’s Office for arraignment on a Supreme Court indictment, which remains under seal,” a spokesperson for the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said in a statement Thursday, according to the report. “Guidance will be provided when the arraignment date is selected.”
