Republican strategist Scott Jennings argued Thursday night during a CNN panel discussion that former Republican Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan of Georgia wanted President-elect Donald Trump “to fail.”
Duncan, who backed Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, criticized Trump for some of his cabinet picks, including former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii for Director of National Intelligence and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Jennings responded by stating that Trump ran for re-election and won with the goal of “blowing up Washington.”
“My belief is people did have an expectation that they would be involved, and the reason that they were okay with it is because, look, they are fed up with institutional Washington,” Jennings said. “Now, that’s different than actually going through the confirmation and running the gauntlet and getting confirmed. But, I don’t think there should be any political mistake here. Trump ran with these people, he ran on these people, he ran on the idea of blowing up Washington and he is following through.”
Former CNN analyst John Avlon, who ran for Congress as a Democrat, referenced Republican Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah’s criticism of Gabbard, sparking a back-and-forth in which Jennings responded that he was “waiting for the confirmation hearings.”
“He won the election. He did a great job of being the mouthpiece of all things that bothered people without having to deliver solutions. But the problem now, he’s in the job, he is going to be the president … and he has no solutions. None,” Duncan mysteriously claimed.
After another panelist noted that Duncan disagreed with Trump’s solutions, Jennings outlined Trump’s proposals.
“Extend the tax cuts, fight for American workers, get the immigration system under control, stop spending out of control out of the federal budget, lower inflation, also unleash American energy,” Jennings said, with Duncan cutting in, saying, “I asked you what he was going to do to lower inflation.”
Duncan again pressed Jennings, claiming that he wanted details on reducing inflation, not boosting the economy.
“I know you got your stump you love to polish. It’s over. The campaign was weeks ago,” Jennings said, with Duncan claiming, “Being an American is not over. Wrecking the country is not over. Our future is not over.”
“He won the election. Being an American is not over,” Jennings responded.
Duncan countered that he wanted Trump held “accountable.”
“Make sure he didn’t just run as a conservative,” Duncan said. “He operates a government that’s conservative.”
“You want it to fail,” Jennings responded.
