A potential breakthrough in the U.S.-China tariff dispute emerged Tuesday evening, as both sides signaled a willingness to engage in renewed dialogue.
According to statements from their respective agencies, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer are set to meet with Chinese officials in Switzerland this weekend to discuss key trade and economic issues.
Chinese authorities have reportedly confirmed their participation in the upcoming talks, the Daily Wire reported.
“I was going to be in Switzerland to negotiate with the Swiss. Turns out, the Chinese team is traveling through Europe and they will be in Switzerland also. So, we will meet on Saturday and Sunday,” Bessent said during an interview on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle.”
Many countries were granted a 90-day reprieve from “Liberation Day” tariffs that exceeded the baseline rate of 10% last month. However, the United States raised the overall penalty on Chinese goods to 145%. In response, Beijing increased tariffs on U.S. goods to 125%.
“The world has been coming to the U.S., and China has been the missing piece,” Bessent said. He added later that the United States and China have “shared interests” and stressed that the current situation “isn’t sustainable, as I’ve said before, especially on the Chinese side.”
Protests broke out across China last month as factory workers in Suining, Hunan, and Inner Mongolia demanded overdue wages and benefits following factory shutdowns linked to steep tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. The U.S. economy has also felt the effects, with a decline in shipments from China and rising concerns over potential price increases.
“We don’t want to decouple; what we want is fair trade,” Bessent said.
Officials from the Trump administration have been negotiating trade deals with various nations over the past several weeks, indicating progress in discussions with countries such as India, South Korea, and Japan.
