Sen. John Fetterman, a Democrat from Pennsylvania, criticized his party on Monday regarding the anti-immigration enforcement riots occurring in the Los Angeles area.
“I unapologetically stand for free speech, peaceful demonstrations, and immigration — but this is not that. This is anarchy and true chaos,” Fetterman posted on the X platform. “My party loses the moral high ground when we refuse to condemn setting cars on fire, destroying buildings, and assaulting law enforcement.”
The Pennsylvania senator’s criticism of his own party comes amid growing attacks from Democrats in Washington and California against President Donald Trump and his administration for deploying National Guard troops and Marines to Los Angeles County.
Since Friday, riots that began as protests against immigration enforcement have escalated across parts of Los Angeles. Masked rioters carrying foreign flags have set vehicles ablaze, hurled bricks at law enforcement, clashed with authorities, vandalized property, obstructed traffic, and fueled broader civil unrest.
Throughout the riots, prominent Democrats have directed more criticism at the Trump administration’s decision to deploy troops to contain the unrest than at the rioters themselves. Many have accused federal authorities of inflaming tensions rather than condemning the violence carried out by anti-law enforcement demonstrators.
“Deploying the National Guard is a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos. In addition to the recent ICE raids in Southern California and across our nation, it is part of the Trump Administration’s cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division,” former Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement that went on to call the demonstrations “overwhelmingly peaceful.”
On Monday, the state of California filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over the deployment of National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom accused President Trump of violating the Constitution and infringing on the state’s authority.
Newsom and other Democratic leaders have also argued that the increased federal law enforcement presence has escalated the unrest rather than helped to restore order.
