President Joe Biden gave, what has been regarded as, his farewell speech at the Democrat National Convention, but it did not accomplish the goal that the event has set as its priority.
His speech was consistent with anger, vitriol, and yelling, far from the “joy” gimmick the Democrats have said they want to promote, as Fox News anchor Brett Baier noticed.
“President Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States, wiping a tear away after his daughter’s introduction, with an extended ovation when he took the stage, with cheers of thank you, Joe, from this crowd,” the host said. “Well past primetime, past midnight on the East Coast, he was in this State of the Union speech cadence, and really hitting sort of a yelling tone for a lot of the speech. It came off as almost angry, not full of joy, but he was hitting themes that he’s hit before.”
“January 6th, fight for democracy, the threat to democracy, and talking about Charlottesville, how he started his campaign,” he said. “He obviously passed the torch towards the end of his speech. It took him a long time to get to that passing of the torch, but on the stage now, the new nominee, and it’s hard to believe, Martha, that it was just a short time ago that this was going to be his convention.”
Towards the end of the speech the president appeared to lament being pushed out of the campaign for the presidency.
“I made a lot of mistakes in my career, but I gave my best to you,” he said in an angry tone.
“For 50 years, like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to our nation. And I have been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people,” the president said, continuing to yell.
“I may have been too young to be in the Senate because I wasn’t 30 yet — and too old to stay as president,” he said.
