Bill Maher Slams Leftists For Being Intolerant, Cutting Off Trump Supporters

Comedian and political commentator Bill Maher took aim at the political left for distancing themselves from family members over political disagreements in a recent episode of his podcast, Club Random.

Maher and fellow comedian Jay Leno discussed the backlash late actor and host Sammy Davis Jr. faced in the 1970s for hugging President Richard Nixon, comparing it to the modern left. Maher noted that many on the left are now willing to sever ties with family, friends, and acquaintances solely over differing political views, the Daily Caller noted.

“It’s so funny you mention that because today, we live in this time when you’re not allowed to have friends from the other side or cross lines politically,” Maher said. “And I forgot that there’s an example of that way back when. A guy who crossed lines politically, ‘oh, the worst thing you could ever do is be friends with a Republican. Ah, call 911,'” Maher said.

“This is what I f**king hate about the left, and they’re not gonna get me over to the Trump side like they think they will sometimes, but just the idea [of] ‘cut your family off from Thanksgiving if they voted for the wrong guy,’ f**k off, you f**ks. But when [Davis] hugged Nixon, he was ostracized by the left a lot. That was an early harbinger of that,” he added.

Maher took a similar stance during a Nov. 25 segment of his HBO program, “Real Times with Bill Maher,” arguing there cannot be a “viable society” if many aspects of life, including Christmas and disaster relief, cannot “transcend politics.”

He also ripped Yale University chief psychiatry resident Dr. Amanda Calhoun, who told MSNBC’s Joy Reid during a Nov. 9 segment that it is acceptable to cut off family members who voted for President-elect Donald Trump and not spend the holidays with them since they cast a ballot “against [their] livelihood.”

“Oh, how pure. It’s like not letting certain people sit with you on the bus,” Maher said while showing a photo of civil rights icon Rosa Parks. “Think about that, a mental health professional advising people to isolate during the holidays. And don’t forget to drink too much and put on weight.

“You know who I really wouldn’t want to have Thanksgiving dinner with? This overly educated,  extremely stupid, Ivory Tower academic, but I would because if we ever want this nation to heal, this is what we have to do, force ourselves to reach out and find out why someone feels the way they do, and make the choices they make without prejudging them a monster. And they must do the same for you,” Maher added.
