A suspected pair of illegal immigrants—one allegedly carrying a loaded machine gun—are back on the streets of New York City after assaulting two police officers during a failed arrest last week.
Abraham Sosa, 20, who resides in an apartment above a Bronx day care, was caught trespassing and urinating in a restricted subway tunnel on Nov. 5 around 4:30 p.m. NYPD officers approached him and repeatedly requested his identification, which he refused to provide.
When officers attempted to arrest Sosa on the Kingsbridge subway station’s northbound platform, he resisted by “stiffening his arms and refusing to be handcuffed,” police said. A scuffle ensued, during which 20-year-old Christopher Mayren intervened to prevent the arrest.
During the altercation, a loaded and defaced Palmetto State Armory PA-15 rifle reportedly fell out of Sosa’s backpack. Mayren escalated the situation by kicking one of the officers’ body cameras onto the subway tracks. He was also found later with one of the officer’s cell phones.
Both suspects were taken into custody, and two officers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries after being knocked to the ground in the struggle.
Sosa faces multiple charges, including criminal possession of a machine gun, criminal possession of a loaded firearm and a defaced weapon, resisting arrest, trespassing, assault on a police officer, and 25 counts of criminal possession of ammunition. Mayren was charged with obstructing governmental administration, criminal mischief, criminal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and harassment.
Despite the severity of the charges, Mayren was released without bail. Sosa posted his $25,000 bond on Nov. 12 and was released from Rikers Island, according to the Bronx District Attorney’s Office.
The NYPD confirmed that neither suspect had prior arrests. Sosa, upon his arrest, reportedly downplayed the incident, telling officers, “Really? For using the bathroom?” He also claimed an ankle injury, saying, “Let me show you my ankle.”
According to The New York Post, citing unnamed sources, the two suspects are illegal immigrants. The report alleges that a tattoo on Mayren’s arm links him to a notorious drug cartel. By law, law enforcement is restricted from disclosing immigration status, reports Fox News Digital.
“This is crazy,” a Bronx detective told The Post. “You have a member of a Mexican cartel running around. That tattoo is a billboard for ‘I am a criminal. I don’t care about your laws.’ Can it get more dangerous than riding a subway with a loaded rifle? And when he’s not on a train, he’s upstairs from little children in the day care center. These are two very dangerous scenarios.”
This isn’t the first time illegal immigrants have been implicated in attacks on law enforcement in New York. In January, a viral video showed a group of migrants kicking two police officers in Times Square, igniting widespread outrage.
