Aurora, Colorado, police reported that a violent armed home invasion early Tuesday at The Edge at Lowry Apartments was “without question a gang incident,” resulting in the detention of 14 suspects.
The incident occurred shortly before 2:30 a.m. when police responded to a call regarding an armed home invasion at the complex on Dallas Street. According to the Aurora Police Department, 13 to 15 individuals, primarily men but also some women, forced entry into an apartment where two individuals were present.
Police said the suspects abducted the victims, who are reportedly illegal immigrants, and moved them to another apartment within the same complex. There, the victims were “threatened and bound.” One victim, a man, suffered a stab wound but is expected to recover. Both victims remain hospitalized for treatment of their injuries, Fox News reports.
“They were pistol-whipped, they were beat, they were mistreated,” Police Chief Todd Chamberlain said during a press conference. “So does that fall in the category of torture for me? Yeah, it does.”
The victims were eventually released by the suspects and contacted authorities.
Chief Chamberlain stated that investigators are treating the case as a gang-related crime, though the specific affiliation remains uncertain. “There is a high assumption that they may be affiliated with the TdA [Tren de Aragua] gang,” he said, referencing a notorious Venezuelan criminal organization, though he emphasized that the connection is not yet confirmed.
This same apartment complex gained notoriety earlier this year when a viral video captured armed individuals, believed to be members of TdA, patrolling its hallways and stairwells.
“We have focused on that area extensively,” Chamberlain noted, adding that some individuals identified in the earlier video have likely fled the area.
