A House Oversight Committee hearing got chaotic over Elon Musk, the tech CEO who now heads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as Democrats demanded that he be subpoenaed to testify before Congress.
Democrat Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly demanded that the Space X and Tesla CEO testify before the committee as he accused him of attempting to “dismantle federal agencies, fire people, transfer them, offer them early retirement, and have sweeping changes to agencies without any congressional review.”
Kentucky Republican Rep. James Comer immediately moved to dismiss the motion which caused Democrats, like New Mexico Rep. Melanie Stansbury, to become incensed and start shouting.
“Mr. Chairman. I think it’s outrageous that this committee will not even entertain a motion to subpoena,” she said before Comer attempted to regain control of the chamber.
“State your point of order! That’s not a point of order!” the chairman said.
“Somebody who is breaking the law and dismantling our federal agencies and firing federal employees,” she said before Comer again stopped her and shouted, “Out of order!”
“And you will not even entertain a motion to bring him in front of the Oversight Committee?!” the Democrat said.
“Miss Stansbury you are out of order! You know you’re out of order! You know the rules of this committee,” Chairman Comer said.
“Mr. Elon Musk is out of order!” the Democrat responded.
Musk has gained a powerful new ally against those who want to stop his progress in cutting government spending.
Ed Martin, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, sent a letter to Musk in which he vowed to take legal action against anyone who stands in his way.
“It was good to work with the DOGE team this weekend,” the US attorney said in the letter he posted to X. “We must keep all our American government employees safe and we must protect the American peoples property. Anyone imperiling others violating our laws.
“I recognize that some of the staff at DOGE has been targeted publicly. At this time, ask that you utilize me and my staff to assist in protecting the DOGE work and the DOGE workers. Any threats, confrontations, or other actions in any way that impact their work may break numerous laws,” he said.
“Let me assure you this: We will pursue any and all legal action against anyone who impedes your work or threatens your people,” he said to Musk. “We will not act like the previous administration who looked the other way as the Antifa and BLM rioters as well as thugs with guns trashed our capital city.
“We will protect DOGE and other workers no matter what,” he assured the head of DOGE.
