Vice President Harris’ holiday party speech was interrupted by Delaware state Rep. Madinah Wilson-Anton, a Democrat, who called for a ceasefire in the Middle East.

Wilson-Anton held up a sign and shouted at the vice president, expressing concern about the situation in Bethlehem and urging a ceasefire. The vice president responded by cutting off the interruption and stating that she appreciates the desire to be heard but is currently speaking. Wilson-Anton continued to call for a ceasefire as she was escorted out of the event.

Most lawmakers, including President Biden, oppose a call for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Biden has argued that as long as Hamas clings to its ideology of destruction, a ceasefire is not peace, as it allows them time to rebuild their stockpile of rockets and resume attacks on innocents. This stance has caused disagreement within the Democratic Party, with members expressing dissent, including White House interns reportedly sending a letter urging a ceasefire.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) also criticized the Biden administration for vetoing a United Nations resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, calling it “shameful.” AOC stated that the administration cannot reconcile its professed concern for Palestinians and human rights while vetoing the UN’s call for a ceasefire.

Progressive House Representatives Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib, who was censured for chanting a pro-Palestinian slogan, have also voiced similar calls for a ceasefire. The incident at the holiday party reflects the broader disagreement within the Democratic Party and the Biden administration on the approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict.
