The Biden Administraion is poised to unveil an additional $400 million in military aid for Ukraine on Friday, according to a source familiar with the matter as reported by the Associated Press.
This allocation would constitute the third tranche of assistance extended to Ukraine by the Biden administration since the president’s signing of a $95 billion foreign aid bill into law the previous month.
As per the AP, the forthcoming package, facilitated through presidential drawdown authority, is slated to encompass High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, artillery, air defense, anti-tank munitions, armored vehicles, and other essential military assets. Whether this allocation includes another round of Army Tactical Missile System long-range ballistic missiles (ATACMS) remains undisclosed.
On Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky cautioned about the “really difficult situation” his nation faces on the eastern front, where Ukrainian soldiers strive to impede further advancement of Russian forces into their territory.
“With an increase in the supply of weapons,” Zelensky emphasized, as per the Washington Post, “we will be able to stop them in the east. As of now, they seized the initiative there.”
Following the enactment of the $95 billion foreign aid bill, the Biden administration promptly authorized $1 billion via the drawdown authority and sanctioned $6 billion in long-term contracts with defense industry entities for future arms provision.
As the conflict enters its third year, backing for U.S. financial assistance to Ukraine has dwindled among certain sectors, both in public opinion and within Congress. Despite resistance from some quarters, bipartisan consensus prevailed as both the House and Senate ratified the foreign aid bill.
