U.S., Israel Strike Dozens Of Targets In Syria After Collapse

The United States and Israel conducted numerous airstrikes on Sunday targeting locations in Syria following the dramatic collapse of the Assad regime, reports said on Monday.

The strikes were conducted amid concerns that radical and terrorist groups might exploit the situation, the reports noted.

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) reported carrying out precision strikes on more than 75 “known ISIS camps and operatives in central Syria.” The operation aimed to “disrupt, degrade, and defeat ISIS,” preventing the group from capitalizing on Syria’s instability to regroup.

CENTCOM stated there was no evidence of civilian casualties resulting from the strikes.

“There should be no doubt — we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria,” CENTCOM’s commander, General Michael Erik Kurilla, said. “All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way.”

Referencing the airstrikes from the White House, President Joe Biden said, “We’re clear-eyed about the fact that ISIS will try to take advantage of any vacuum, to reestablish its capabilities, to create a safe haven. We will not let that happen.”

Biden also stated the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s 24-year-old regime was “a fundamental act of justice,” given the hundreds of thousands tortured and killed by the regime. It was also “a moment of historic opportunity for the longsuffering people of Syria to build a better future for their proud country.”

Biden described the collapse of the Assad regime as “a moment of risk and uncertainty,” emphasizing that the U.S. would collaborate with regional allies and Syrian stakeholders to address emerging threats. Additionally, he pledged to work with the United Nations (UN) to support a transition toward an independent and sovereign Syria under a new constitution.

Alongside U.S. military actions, suspected Israeli airstrikes targeted multiple locations in southern and southwestern Syria. According to The Times of Israel, the strikes hit ammunition and weapons depots at an airbase in Suwayda, as well as sites in the Daraa Governorate and the capital, Damascus.

Targets in Damascus included an airbase, a major security complex, a branch of the state-owned military research institute, and a central square housing intelligence and customs headquarters.

Reports from Reuters revealed that Syrian forces had abandoned the Suwayda airbase overnight, leaving behind a significant cache of rockets and missiles. The airstrikes were reportedly preemptive, aimed at preventing these weapons from falling into the wrong hands, officials said.
