Trump’s Veiled Threats To Take On Mexico’s Cartels Already Yielding Results: Report

Mexico is reportedly scrambling to prepare for the incoming Trump administration amid concerns that President-elect Donald Trump might take military action against the country’s powerful drug cartels.

Mexico’s new far-left president, Claudia Sheinbaum, who has frequently attributed her nation’s issues to the U.S., has sought to reassure citizens and ease tensions over the potential for U.S. military intervention.

“There won’t be an invasion. It’s not going to happen,” she said recently.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Mexican officials are scrambling to assess the seriousness of the threat posed by President-elect Donald Trump, particularly given that two of his key picks for the upcoming administration—Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) as national security adviser and Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense—are strong advocates for military action against drug cartels, the Daily Wire added.

On the campaign trail, Trump pledged to take decisive action against the cartels, which are linked to over 100,000 American deaths annually.

His plans include using the U.S. Navy to intercept fentanyl precursors from China before they reach Mexico and designating drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). Additionally, Trump has threatened steep tariffs on Mexico if it fails to curb the flow of illegal drugs and migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to the Journal, in response to Trump’s threats, Sheinbaum has begun cracking down on the Sinaloa cartel, widely regarded as the world’s most powerful drug trafficking organization.

Mexican law enforcement has made record seizures of fentanyl linked to the cartel, and Sheinbaum dispatched her security minister to Sinaloa to “oversee efforts to take back control of a state dominated by organized crime.”

Additionally, Mexico is establishing an elite unit of security officers to be vetted and trained by U.S. experts, specifically for operations targeting cartels within the country, the report stated.

Rebeccah Heinrichs, a senior fellow at Hudson Institute and the director of its Keystone Defense Initiative, said that, despite him not being back in office yet, Trump’s tough stance toward Mexico is already yielding results, and “will translate directly to saved American lives.”

The report also noted that President-elect Trump’s nomination of Ron Johnson, a former Green Beret and U.S. intelligence officer, as ambassador to Mexico could have significant implications for the future relationship between the two countries.

Eduardo Guerrero, a Mexico City-based security analyst, told The Journal, “This ambassador will be a de facto part of Mexico’s security cabinet.”
