Punchbowl News reported on Monday that former President Donald Trump’s intensifying and persistent calls for President Joe Biden’s impeachment pose a mounting challenge for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and vulnerable Republican congressmen.
They now find themselves in a politically challenging situation due to the escalating demands for impeachment from Trump, the report stated.
Despite attempts by McCarthy and the House Republican leadership to tread a delicate path concerning the matter of pursuing Biden’s impeachment, Trump remains resolute in his efforts to compel them into taking action, Newsmax noted, citing the report.
But some Republicans, including Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska, however, defended the speaker and said that “McCarthy is in the right spot on this.”
He noted that McCarthy “said last [Wednesday] that the Judiciary and Oversight Committees will continue to investigate the most recent allegations [against Biden], which are serious. He said it was too early for an impeachment inquiry. I believe the Speaker is right. Let’s not follow [former] Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s example by cutting corners on impeachment.”
Currently, only a small fraction of House Republicans are supporting the multiple impeachment resolutions against Biden that have been introduced. Nevertheless, the demand for action is gaining momentum on the right with each passing day.
Amidst this escalating push, Trump’s recent remarks are the most forceful yet, cautioning McCarthy about the potential consequences for the Speaker if substantial impeachment measures are not taken in a timely manner, Newsmax added.
In June, a number of Republicans were upset at GOP colleague Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado after she announced a legislative move to force a vote on articles of impeachment against Biden.
Boebert had taken an unexpected action by submitting a privileged resolution on the House floor, which grants lawmakers the ability to demand a vote without the need for committee approval, a maneuver that some Republicans appear to be opposed to.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., did not say if he supported her resolution but suggested he wasn’t happy about how it skirted his committee despite its months-long investigation into corruption accusations against the Biden family, Fox News reported at the time.
“I don’t like how she presented it by bypassing the committee process, especially when the investigation in the Oversight Committee, which she’s on, is producing new information almost daily,” Comer told the outlet.
“I feel like we’ve got some more work to do on the Oversight Committee before we issue a report, then once we issue a report, depending on what’s in that report, then the Judiciary Committee would be the committee that would then have hearings on any potential wrongdoing and potential impeachment,” he said. “So I wish she had gone about it a different way.”
