President-elect Donald J. Trump is reportedly planning to appoint Senator Marco Rubio of Florida as his secretary of state, according to three individuals familiar with the matter, according to the New York Times. This selection comes as Trump moves efforts along to assemble his foreign policy and national security team.
While Trump may still change his choice up, sources say that Rubio is the number-one contender. Rubio was also under consideration earlier this year as a potential running mate for Trump, according to multiple reports.
Elected to the Senate in 2010, Rubio has established himself as a foreign policy hawk, frequently advocating for tough stances against China and Iran. Initially, his interventionist positions clashed with more isolationist factions within the Republican Party. However, Rubio has recently aligned more closely with Trump on several key issues, including Russia’s war in Ukraine. He has remarked that the conflict has “reached a stalemate” and should be resolved.
Throughout the presidential campaign, Rubio remained a steadfast supporter of Trump, even after being overlooked for the vice-presidential slot.
Reacting to the anticipated appointment, Florida Senator Rick Scott expressed his enthusiasm Monday evening: “I’m thrilled for my friend, Florida colleague, and our next Secretary of State @marcorubio! He will restore American leadership around the world, especially in Latin America, as he represents the United States with dignity and courage! It’s been an honor to serve the people of Florida alongside him and look forward to continuing our work together.”
