Trump Taps Dr. Casey Means for Surgeon General, Pulls Nesheiwat Nomination

In a notable shift in his healthcare team, former President Donald Trump has rescinded his nomination of Dr. Janette Nesheiwat for U.S. Surgeon General and named Dr. Casey Means as his new choice, the White House announced Wednesday.

Dr. Means, a physician and advocate for overhauling chronic disease care, has been tapped to further Trump’s “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) platform, a key pillar of his broader health policy.

“I am pleased to announce that Dr. Casey Means, will be nominated as our next Surgeon General of the United States of America,” Trump declared in a Truth Social post. “Casey has impeccable ‘MAHA’ credentials, and will work closely with our wonderful Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., to ensure a successful implementation of our Agenda in order to reverse the Chronic Disease Epidemic, and ensure Great Health, in the future, for ALL Americans.”

Trump went on to laud Means for her education and accomplishments in the medical field, calling her “absolutely outstanding” and saying she “has the potential to be one of the finest Surgeon Generals in United States History.” He also noted that Dr. Nesheiwat will remain part of his health team in “another capacity at HHS.”

Nesheiwat’s Senate confirmation hearings were scheduled to begin the day after the announcement but were canceled following the nomination change. She is the sister-in-law of Mike Waltz, the former National Security Adviser who stepped down amid controversy involving a secure messaging group in which sensitive military information may have been shared. Waltz has since been tapped to become U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

Dr. Means brings to the role a reputation for challenging the status quo in healthcare. Together with her brother Calley Means—currently a White House health adviser—she has publicly called for stronger emphasis on chronic disease prevention and greater oversight of pharmaceutical practices. The siblings have drawn attention for their critiques of mainstream medical institutions and for highlighting rising rates of illness in the U.S.

Their views reached a wider audience after an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, where they discussed the country’s response to conditions such as diabetes, Alzheimer’s, autism, and cancer.

Dr. Casey Means is also known as the co-founder of Levels, a startup focused on personalized health tracking, which uses tools like continuous glucose monitors to help users better understand their metabolic health.

Her nomination marks a clear continuation of Trump’s push to disrupt traditional healthcare norms and advance a more preventative and transparency-focused public health agenda.
