Former President Donald Trump indicated during a Fox News town hall-style event on Wednesday that he has settled on a running mate.
“Well, I can’t tell you that, really,” Trump said during the event in Iowa when moderators asked about possible VP choices if he were to win the Republican nomination. “I mean, I know who it’s going to be.”
But soon after the event, Trump’s campaign poured cold water on the remark and told NBC News that “nothing is finalized” regarding his potential vice presidential pick.
“He’ll announce his final pick when he’s ready to,” the adviser said.
That said, one of Trump’s close advisers, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, offered up his choice for Trump’s running mate: House GOP Conference Chair Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.).
After giving a tribute to former President Richard Nixon at the Richard Nixon Foundation on what would have been his 111th birthday on Tuesday, Gingrich noted, “I’m a very big fan of Elise’s. Certainly, if there is a short list for vice president, she should be on it.”
“I absolutely believe that she has sort of fought her way onto the national stage, and I hope that she will continue to grow and develop, and certainly my advice to the president would certainly be to consider her on whatever short list he develops for potential vice presidential nominees,” Gingrich added.
“Trump is the best possible hope to try and turn the country around,” Gingrich said.
In October, Stefanik said, “I speak to President Trump a lot. I spoke to him today,” adding that she believes the Biden family’s business dealings are “the biggest political corruption scandal of our lifetime.”
The New York Republican has been one of the most consistent advocates for Trump in the House, and he has frequently been mentioned as a possible running mate. She was also an early supporter of impeachment proceedings against President Biden among House Republican leadership.
