Donald Trump has mentioned that he would consider appointing Elon Musk to a cabinet position if he wins the presidential election in November. These remarks follow a joint interview between Trump and Musk on X.
According to Reuters, when asked by reporters if he would consider Musk for a cabinet role, Trump responded, “He’s a very smart guy. I certainly would, if he would do it, I certainly would. He’s a brilliant guy.”
Last month, Musk publicly endorsed Trump after an assassination attempt on Trump’s life. During their X discussion, Musk praised Trump for his bravery in that moment.
In their recent conversation, Musk offered to assist in a role akin to a “Government Efficiency Committee” to help reduce federal spending. Trump, acknowledging Musk’s success in cost-cutting at his companies, replied, “Well, you’re the greatest cutter. I mean, I look at what you do.”
In Trump’s interview with Reuters and during his discussion with Musk, he touched on the electric vehicle industry and tariffs in the automotive sector. When asked about an electric vehicle tax credit, Trump remarked, “Tax credits and tax incentives are not generally a very good thing.”
If elected, Trump indicated he might consider revising a Treasury Department rule that facilitates automakers’ use of the $7,500 tax credit. “I’m not making any final decisions on it,” Trump said about the EV tax credit. “I’m a big fan of electric cars, but I’m a fan of gasoline-propelled cars, and also hybrids and whatever else happens to come along.”
Trump also criticized Google, a company facing increasing scrutiny under anti-trust laws, saying, “They’re almost like the Wild West. They’re going to have to pay a great price.”
