Too many non-working holidays are draining the U.S. economy of “BILLIONS OF DOLLARS” and holding the country back, President Donald Trump declared on Thursday.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump blasted the growing number of non-working holidays, warning that the U.S. is heading toward a point where nearly every day will be a paid holiday with businesses shut down. He argued that neither workers nor employers want this trend to continue, and called for action to reverse it. The president made his remarks on Juneteenth, a federal holiday signed into law by former President Joe Biden.
“Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” Trump said.
Biden signed the Juneteenth bill into law on June 18, 2021, during a White House ceremony where he pushed for more racial equity and criticized new state laws aimed at strengthening election integrity.
“Folks, the promise of equality is not going to be fulfilled until we become real — it becomes real in our schools and on our Main Streets and in our neighborhoods — our health care system and ensuring that equity is at the heart of our fight against the pandemic; in the water that comes out of our faucets and the air that we breathe in our communities; in our justice system — so that we can fulfill the promise of America for all people. All of our people,” Biden said.
The bill passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, sailing through the Senate unanimously. In the House, just 14 Republicans voted against it.
Juneteenth became the first new national holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which was established in 1983 to honor the civil rights leader’s birthday.
