On Wednesday, President Donald Trump pushed for support of a continuing resolution (CR) to prevent a partial government shutdown looming in less than two weeks.

He assured conservative lawmakers, who typically oppose stopgap funding measures, that they would “love” this one.

“Government funding runs out next week, and Democrats are threatening to shut down the Government — But I am working with the GREAT House Republicans on a Continuing Resolution to fund the Government until September to give us some needed time to work on our Agenda,” Trump said in a post to Truth Social.

He added, “Conservatives will love this Bill, because it sets us up to cut Taxes and Spending in Reconciliation, all while effectively FREEZING Spending this year, and allowing us to continue our work to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. VERY IMPORTANT — Let’s get this Bill done!”

Trump was referring to a continuing resolution that narrowly passed the House last week as part of the budget reconciliation process. The measure sets fiscal priorities for future spending bills, aligning with his domestic agenda in key areas such as national defense, border security, and tax cuts.

If a funding bill is not passed in time, a partial government shutdown will begin on March 15, forcing non-essential federal employees to be furloughed, while those performing critical duties—such as air traffic control and law enforcement—will continue working without pay, at least temporarily.

Some House Republicans have signaled opposition or outright rejected the continuing resolution (CR), suggesting that it will require bipartisan support to pass in the House of Representatives.

However, Politico reported that Trump “made progress” in winning over GOP holdouts during a White House meeting on Wednesday, increasing the chances of the measure advancing.

“Who would want to stall President Trump and the American people’s agenda? Only Democrats have said they want to shut down the government,” House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) said in a post to X. “Let’s pass the CR and keep working on the mandate.”
