What started as a lawful enforcement operation quickly spiraled into chaos in the so-called sanctuary city of Los Angeles, with some Trump administration officials labeling what appear to be organized attacks against federal immigration agents as an “insurrection.”
On Friday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents carried out multiple raids, targeting a Home Depot, fashion warehouses, downtown clothing outlets, and a meat-packing plant in Paramount—detaining deportable illegal immigrants, including individuals with criminal records.
The response was swift and unruly. Large crowds gathered, blocking roads, throwing bricks and concrete, setting trash fires, defacing federal buildings with graffiti, and attacking federal vehicles. But according to Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, the ICE raids targeted known illegal alien criminals and gang members.
“Federal sources ID some of the criminal illegal alien targets ICE arrested in their LA operation yesterday & today, which sparked violent protests. They include multiple gang members, convicted sex offenders, violent gun offenders, & drug offenders. One has already been deported,” he wrote online. They include:
Rolando Veneracion-Enriquez, a national of the Philippines who has prior convictions for sexual penetration with a foreign object, assault with intent to commit rape, and burglary, all in California.
ARMANDO ORDAZ, a Mexican national & known gang member with a convictions for sexual battery, receiving stolen property, and theft in Los Angeles.
VICTOR MENDOZA-AGUILAR, a previously deported Mexican national & known gang member with convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, and possessing drug paraphernalia.
DELFINO AGUILAR MARTINEZ, a Mexican national with a conviction for assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury in LA.
Melugin also posted dramatic video from inside an ICE van that came under assault from the insurrectionists.
Speeches by Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass played a significant role in fueling unrest, as their strong condemnations of the ICE operations were widely seen as rallying cries for rioters and lawless protesters.
In response to the escalating violence, President Trump ordered thousands of National Guard troops deployed to the city, with even active-duty Marines placed on alert, after Newsom refused to do anything to help protect federal officers.
