President Trump has halted all U.S. military aid to Ukraine following a contentious meeting last week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House, according to Bloomberg. The suspension will remain in place until Trump believes that “the Ukrainians show a commitment of good faith peace negotiations,” reports The Hill.
The decision follows comments by Zelensky, who stated that a resolution to the war with Russia is still “very, very far away.”
Zelensky was in London this past weekend as part of an initiative led by U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer to seek a peace agreement for Ukraine. When asked about a new European effort to end the conflict, Zelensky said, “We are talking about the first steps today, and therefore, until they are on paper, I would not like to talk about them in great detail.” He added, “An agreement to end the war is still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet. The peace that we foresee in the future must be just, honest, and most importantly, sustainable.”
Later on Monday, Trump criticized Zelensky’s remarks, suggesting that an end to the war was still distant.
White House officials told Fox News that following the tense meeting, “Ukrainians were begging to reset,” but Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz informed them that Zelensky needed to leave White House grounds. The officials noted that Trump and U.S. officials felt disrespected by Zelensky, who was reportedly “shrugging and rolling his eyes” during the discussion. As a result, a lunch planned for Zelensky and Trump was instead given to White House Press Office staff.
Zelensky left the White House at 1:42 pm on Friday, as reported by the New York Post. A planned press conference between the two leaders was also canceled, and a deal for rare earth minerals that was to be signed on Friday did not materialize.
Following the meeting, Trump commented, “We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today. Much was learned that could never be understood without conversation under such fire and pressure. It’s amazing what comes out through emotion, and I have determined that President Zelenskyy is not ready for Peace if America is involved, because he feels our involvement gives him a big advantage in negotiations. I don’t want advantage, I want PEACE. He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office. He can come back when he is ready for Peace.”
