The Trump administration is set to shut down more than 120 IRS taxpayer assistance centers as part of its broader plan to cut costs and reduce the size of the federal government. The move, detailed in a letter from the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) obtained by Washington Post, comes in the middle of tax season, which ends on April 15.
The closures follow the recent layoffs of approximately 7,000 probationary IRS employees and are in line with efforts to decrease the agency’s workforce. At least 128 taxpayer assistance centers—where filers can receive free, in-person tax help by appointment—will be affected. It remains unclear whether these centers will be relocated or shut down permanently.
According to the letter, signed by GSA Commissioner for Public Buildings Michael Peters, all soft-term leases—those that can be terminated on short notice—will be ended unless deemed “public-facing.” Those exceptions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
This decision signals a major shift after years of IRS expansion aimed at improving customer service. Following the passage of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS had opened or reopened more than 50 assistance centers, bringing the total number to over 360 nationwide.
The Post writes that the centers are important for people facing “complicated tax problems”: Those centers can be crucial for people facing complicated tax problems or dealing with identity theft, said Nina Olson, the IRS’s former national taxpayer advocate.
“Sometimes you need to sit down and talk to someone,” said Olson, who is now executive director of the Center for Taxpayer Rights.
Per the letter, IRS employees will have at least 120 days to vacate the affected offices once lease terminations are officially announced. Notifications to landlords are expected to begin soon.
