President Donald Trump’s administration has cut funding for what it said was “divisive” and “woke” programming on PBS.
The Department of Education, headed by former World Wrestling Entertainment CEO Linda McMahon, has cut back government grants on the controversial children’s programming, The Daily Wire reported.
Department Of Education spokeswoman Madi Biedermann said the Ready To Learn funds were being used to fund “racial justice educational programming,” on PBS.
“The Trump Department of Education will prioritize funding that supports meaningful learning and improving student outcomes, not divisive ideologies and woke propaganda,” she said.
“On our Street, we celebrate inclusion, belonging, and freedom of authentic self-expression. Happy #PrideMonth to all the people in our neighborhoods!” the show said in a June 2023 post.
But the Corporation For Public Broadcasting said that the program is non-partisan and needed.
“On May 2, the U.S. Department of Education notified the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) that its 2020-2025 Ready To Learn grant is terminated, effective immediately. CPB then informed PBS and 44 public media stations in 28 states and the District of Columbia that receive Ready To Learn grants to stop work immediately, pausing the program in rural and urban communities throughout the country,” The Corporation For Publican Broadcasting said in a press release on Tuesday.
“Nearly every parent has raised their kids on public broadcasting’s children’s content. For the past 30 years, Ready To Learn-funded PBS KIDS content has produced measurable, real-world impacts on children’s learning,” Patricia Harrison, President and CEO of CPB, said.
“Ready To Learn has received strong bipartisan support from Congress for the last 30 years because of the programs’ proven educational value in advancing early learning skills for all children. We will work with Congress and the Administration to preserve funding for this essential program,” she said.
“Congress is also aware that public media offers a safe place for children to learn, protected from inappropriate content on commercial and social media – free of charge and commercial free,” the press release said.
