Tim Walz, Kamala Harris’ pick for vice president, played a key role in extending free college tuition to illegal immigrants in Minnesota during his tenure as governor.
In 2023, Walz signed into law the “North Star Promise” program, which allows illegal immigrants to apply for free tuition at Minnesota State and University of Minnesota institutions if their family income is below $80,000, according to a report from SCRIPPS News.

The Minnesota Office of Higher Education describes the North Star Promise as a “last-dollar” program, covering the remaining tuition and fees after applying other financial aid, such as scholarships, grants, stipends, and tuition waivers.
In addition to the tuition program, Walz also signed legislation allowing illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses. He argued that “Ensuring drivers in our state are licensed and carry insurance makes the roads safer for all Minnesotans,” as reported by the National Review.

Since Walz was selected as the vice-presidential nominee for the 2024 Democratic ticket by Harris, scrutiny has increased over his past policy decisions and statements. Critics have also questioned his military record, accusing him of exaggerating and making misleading claims about his service.
