A man from Thrall, Texas, armed with a knife engraved with “Hail Satan,” reportedly broke into a residence and was subsequently shot by the homeowner on Monday night, according to police.

The Taylor Police Department reported that 23-year-old Austin Sumpter was apprehended and charged with residential burglary with the intent to commit a felony.

The incident began around 11:30 p.m. on Monday when a homeowner called the police, reporting that a man with a knife was attempting to enter their home, Fox reports.

As officers were en route, Sumpter allegedly succeeded in breaking into the residence and was shot by the homeowner.

Upon arrival, officers found Sumpter lying on the front porch with a single gunshot wound to his hip.

Police recovered a large knife and sheath, both inscribed with “Hail Satan,” that Sumpter was allegedly carrying.

Sumpter was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Sumpter, and following his discharge from the hospital on Wednesday morning, he was taken into custody and transported to the Williamson County Jail.
