Taylor Greene to Meet With Speaker Johnson Ahead Of Motion to Vacate

Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene is planning to meet with House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday ahead of deciding whether she will trigger a motion to vacate his chair.

According to Newsmax, Greene is expected to meet with Johnson around 3:30 p.m. east coast time.

On Wednesday, Greene announced her intention to trigger a motion to remove Johnson from the speakership. In March, she filed a motion to remove the speaker due to his support of the $1.2 trillion spending bill that included billions for Ukraine but nothing for improving border security.

“We need leaders in the House of Representatives that are going to get this done,” Greene said Wednesday. “Mike Johnson is not capable of that job.”

Greene is defying Trump’s wishes despite being a strong supporter. Trump last month offered words of praise for Johnson, saying he is “trying very hard” and is “a very good person.”

“Look, we have a majority of one [in the House],” Trump said. “It’s not like he can go and do whatever he wants. I think he’s a very good person. I think he’s a very good man. I think he’s trying very hard. And, again, we have to have a very big election to increase the Republican majority in the House.”

In a statement of his own, the Louisiana Republican called the Georgia Republican’s motion “wrong for the Republican Conference, wrong for the institution, and wrong for the country.”

Democrats have come out in support of Johnson, calling the effort to remove him more Republican “chaos.”

In March, Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) said he will join Republican Reps. Greene Thomas Massie of Kentucky in calling for Johnson’s ouster, further threatening the party’s thin majority and adding to the perception that the House GOP is in chaos.

Gosar “released a statement shortly after Johnson’s plan—four bills amounting to $95 billion in spending—survived a key procedural vote on the House floor with more Democratic support than Republican,” Fox News reported.

The outlet added: “He bashed House GOP leaders for not linking his foreign aid proposal, particularly a bill sending money to Ukraine, to U.S. border security measures – frustration shared by other conservative foreign aid skeptics who voted to block the plan from getting a vote on final passage.”

Gosar’s statement said, in part:

“[R]ather than spending the resources to secure our southern border and combating the invasion of 11 million illegals and despite repeated promises there would be no additional money going to Ukraine without first securing our border, the United States House of Representatives, under the direction of the Speaker, is on the verge of sending another $61 billion to further draw America into an endless and purposeless war in Ukraine.”

“I have added my name in support of the motion to vacate the Speaker. Our border cannot be an afterthought.  We need a Speaker who puts America first rather than bending to the reckless demands of the warmongers, neo-cons, and the military-industrial complex making billions from a costly and endless war half a world away.”
