Six Illegal Immigrants Charged In South Carolina Mother’s Shooting Death, Sheriff Says

Six illegal immigrants, including three juveniles, have been arrested and charged in connection with the May 2 shooting death of a woman in Lancaster, South Carolina. Local authorities say the suspects, ranging in age from 13 to 21, allegedly targeted the victim in what’s been described as a random act of violence.

Larisha Sharrell Thompson, 40, was found shot and killed inside her car on Riverside Road in Lancaster, about an hour south of Charlotte, North Carolina. According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Thompson was on her way to meet friends when the suspects pulled up alongside her vehicle and opened fire.

On May 12, the sheriff’s office announced charges against Asael Aminadas Torres-Chirinos, 21; Jarby Ardon Ramos-Odari, 18; Jeyson Sobied Pineda-Salgado, 17; and three juveniles ages 13, 14, and 15. The three adults are charged with murder, attempted armed robbery, and second-degree burglary. Torres-Chirinos also faces two counts of firearm possession during a violent crime and one count of firearm possession by an unlawful alien. The juveniles face the same charges as the adults, excluding the firearm offenses, reports WCNC.

Authorities say all six suspects were in the same car when they attempted to rob Thompson. The sheriff’s office alleges that Torres-Chirinos fired the fatal shot after the group failed to gain access to her locked vehicle.

“The Department of Homeland Security has placed detainers on these six,” Sheriff Barry Faile said, according to Fox.. “That doesn’t mean the federal government will scoop them up and send them out of the country before their cases are heard in court. It simply means if for any reason, any one or more of them becomes eligible for release before their charges are resolved in court, Homeland Security will take custody of them, and they will not be back out on the street. Our intention is that all six remain detained until they face the full weight of our judicial system.”

Detectives also linked the suspects to a break-in at the Van Wyck Mart on Rock Hill Highway that occurred days earlier. Surveillance footage showed a group attempting to force their way into the store around 10:30 p.m. on April 29. When they couldn’t access the main store area, they allegedly entered through a bathroom connected to the interior, damaging property and firing a handgun during the break-in.

Ballistic evidence collected at the store matched the firearm used in Thompson’s murder, according to investigators. The two crime scenes are located less than ten minutes apart.

Torres-Chirinos was identified through video surveillance at both crime scenes. Detectives questioned him on May 8, and by the end of that day, they had identified and detained the five other suspects.

“This shooting defies any sense of decency in a civilized society,” Faile said in a statement. “Ms. Thompson was going about her business on a Friday night, not bothering anyone. All of a sudden, these six men and boys — out to get something for nothing from someone they did not know and had no business bothering — pulled alongside her car, and Torres-Chirinos opened fire, killing Ms. Thompson. There’s no place in our society for acts like this or the people who commit them, and my hope is these six are never again among us.”

Faile added that the arrests have made the community safer: “The Department of Homeland Security has placed detainers on all six individuals charged.” He also noted, “The community is a much safer place today because these six individuals are off the streets.”

A judge has denied bond for the three adult suspects. All six remain in custody.
