Sean “Diddy” Combs was denied bail on Wednesday as he awaits his May trial on sex trafficking charges. U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian ruled that Combs poses a “serious risk” of witness tampering and cited evidence that he attempted to conceal prohibited communications while in custody.
In his five-page ruling, Subramanian rejected a proposed $50 million bail package, agreeing with prosecutors that no conditions could ensure public safety or prevent Combs from fleeing. “There is compelling evidence of Combs’s propensity for violence,” the judge wrote.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to allegations of coercing and abusing women over several years, with the indictment detailing accusations of blackmail, violence, and other criminal acts. Prosecutors have also accused him of orchestrating social media campaigns to sway jurors and using third parties to contact potential witnesses.
Subramanian noted evidence of Combs deleting text messages with a grand jury witness and violating prison regulations by paying inmates for access to unauthorized phone codes.
Combs’ lawyers have argued that the alleged abuse occurred during consensual adult relationships and claim new evidence undermines the accusations. They maintain that Combs did not misuse his “power and prestige” to coerce women into illicit acts.
A federal appeals court previously denied Combs’ release while his bail request undergoes further consideration by a panel of judges. Subramanian, newly assigned to the case, stated that he carefully reviewed all arguments before issuing his decision.
